NBC, LAWMA collaborate on waste recycling

The company stated in a statement that the event, which held at LAWMA loading bay, aimed to build awareness and increase the recycling culture among primary and secondary school pupils and had over 100 pupils from 15 public and private schools in attendance.

It said the education-based initiative was also designed to recognise and reward students in Lagos for their strong understanding of the environment and how it affected them.

The statement added that ultimately, the initiative would seek to enable the pupils imbibe a strong culture of recycling.

It also quoted the Head, Public Affairs and Communications, NBC, Mrs. Yanju Olomola, as saying that as a business, the Coca-Cola system was committed to minimising its impact on the natural environment as part of broader efforts to integrate socially responsible behaviour and sustainable management principle in all areas of its operation.

Olomola stated that NBC’s sustainable initiatives on the environment were in the areas of water stewardship, energy, packaging and recycling.

She was quoted as saying, “Under our packaging and recycling initiatives, NBC has invested in environment friendly packaging through light-weighting a number of our packaging. We introduced the ultra glass packaging for the returnable glass segment of our sparkling soft drinks category in 2009 and the best bottle in the world for the Eva water category in 2012.

“These packaging are environment friendly, requiring less material for their production, whilst being more durable than their predecessors.”

The Recycling Manager, LAWMA, Mrs. Tolulope Adeyo, was also quoted as saying that the maiden edition of the quiz and exhibition was to evaluate what had been learnt in the recycling clubs of the schools and to create more awareness on recycling among the pupils.

Adeyo urged the teachers, schools and parents to support the recycling programme.
